Heating Equipment Tips - Humidifiers, Furnaces and Boilers
Now that winter is fast approaching a lot of people start to think about their heating equipment to prepare for winters chill. What people don't realize is that people all over the country have completely different types of heating equipment and it all depends on where you live. Most people either have a gas, electric or oil furnace while others have boilers, radiant and heat pumps. The type of heating equipment you have varies depending in what part of the country you live in. For example, Chicago heating equipment typically consists of furnaces and boilers while many folks in Georgia have heat pumps. The most comfortable heating equipment in my opinion is a steam boiler. Steam boilers have a semi closed loop system that boils water into steam and distributes steam throughout a network of pipes and radiators. Steam is extremely comfortable because it not only provides heat to your home or business but it adds humidity into the air at the same time. You can feel the difference when there is humidity in the air. That brings me to my next piece of heating equipment, humidifiers. Humidifiers are used in conjunction with furnaces and greatly improve the indoor comfort level and helps with additional issues such as dry skin, bloody noses and static electricity. Humidifiers are mounted to a sheet metal plenum that sits on top of your furnace and contains a few simple components and actually uses gravity for the distribution of water! Humidifiers have a water source connected to them which can either be hot water or cold water. I prefer hot water because it performs better but the downside is that it has a tendency to ruin the solenoid valve and water line components much faster than cold water. A humidistat acts much like your typical thermostat. You can set the humidity level and it will humidify the air automatically, opening and closing a solenoid valve letting water into the humidifier. Water flows down a humidifier pad (gravity) and air from the indoor fan is blown through the humidifier pad introducing humidity into the air. One of the first things I did when I bought my home was install a humidifier, it makes a huge difference. One of the better known brands of humidifiers is Aprilaire and are reliable, well made and replacement parts are common. These are many different types of heating equipment out there and heating equipment manufacturers keep improving energy efficiency year after year to keep up with the rising costs of energy. If you're thinking you cannot afford to replace your furnace or boiler, think again. Most new heating equipment can save you anywhere from 15% to 45% off of your CURRENT gas bill and as energy keeps going up so will your savings with new heating equipment.
